Online CDT Training

CSI and AEC Daily have partnered to produce the first of 10 online courses for the Certified Document Technologist (CDT) CSI certificate program.  The course is based on the Project Resource Manual –CSI Manual of Practice and CSI’s Construction Documents Education Program.  The courses have been developed as an introduction to construction documents and as an additional study aid for those preparing for CSI’s Construction Documents Technology (CDT) Program exam.  The courses are free to industry professionals.  To take the CDT instructional course online, visit www.aecdaily.com, and elect “Online Learning”on the left hand navigation bar. Course participants are encouraged to register for the CDT exam and it is strongly suggested that they contact their local CSI chapter for information on local education sessions, study groups and mentoring programs.

Recognize Your Knowledge & Expertise with the Industry Standard—CSI Certification

Construction professionals must maintain the highest industry standards. That is why the CSI certification program is a benchmark for technical knowledge.

Since its founding in 1948, The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) established, and continues to refine, widely used standards for organizing construction information. CSI established its first certification program, Certified Construction Specifier, in 1978 to recognize people who have demonstrated their knowledge and expertise in these standard formats.

CSI certification has evolved to recognizing excellence in four areas. The Construction Documents Technology Certificate Program (CDT) recognizes demonstrated mastery of construction basics. After becoming a Construction Documents Technologist, practitioners can pursue recognition in their specific fields. The Certified Construction Specifier Program (CCS) acknowledges those demonstrating excellence in preparing written specifications. The Certified Construction Contract Administrator Program (CCCA) recognizes those who excel at overseeing the contract administration process. The Certified Construction Product Representative Program (CCPR) honors people skilled at supplying specifiers and contractors with information, products and materials, or substitution solutions.

Construction Documents Technologist (CDT)

The CDT program is a rigorous and comprehensive course of study. Participants earn a certificate as a Construction Documents Technologist Certificate. This certificate represents the holder’s broad-based knowledge of and excellence in the writing and management of construction documents. The CDT certificate program is the foundation for CSI’s certification programs.

The CDT program is a recommended certificate program for architects, contractors, contract administrators, manufacturers representatives, specifiers, and all others concerned with writing, enforcing, or interpreting any aspect of construction documentation.

Certified Construction Specifier (CCS)

The CCS program is recommended for specifiers. It prepares the candidate for certification by the Institute as Certified Construction Specifiers. The CCS certification is proof of the holder’s excellence in preparing contract documents.

Certified Construction Contract Administrator (CCCA)

The CCCA program prepares candidates for certification by the Institute as Certified Construction Contract Administrators. The CCCA certification is proof of the holder’s skill in effective contract administration and ability to bring projects in on time and within budget.

The CCCA certification program is recommended for contractors, design professionals, engineers, facility managers, owners, and other professionals with responsibility for executing contract documents.

Certified Construction Product Representative (CCPR)

The CCPR program prepares candidates for certification by the Institute as a Certified Construction Product Representatives. CCPR certification demonstrates the holder’s in-depth knowledge of the construction process and superior ability in effective product representation.

The CCPR certification program is recommended for product representatives, manufacturers’ representatives, material suppliers, distributors, and independent representatives.

Ms. Elizabeth McCarty ofRSL Commercial Architecture

CCS, CCPR (Certified Construction Product Representative) and CCCA (Certified Construction Contract Administrator) are prestigious, nationally recognized credentials that demonstrate superior knowledge and understanding of the roles, responsibilities, and activities involved in good construction. CDT is a ‘gateway’ exam while CCS, CCPR and CCCA are professional certification exams for those who have obtained their CDT.

To become certified, candidates must pass rigorous exams that are based on CSI’s  Project Resource Manual™ (PRM), the construction industry’s model for best practices in the fields of specification writing, product representation and contract administration. Preparation for the exams takes months of work. To maintain advanced certification (CCS, CCCA and CCPR) once it has been attained, the practitioner must participate in continuing education programs each year.

Certification is considered a milestone in an individual's professional development, and proof of the individual’s commitment to continuous improvement in the construction industry.
